Built for a young family that loves to spend their time enjoying the great outdoors, this modern take on a Moose-Ridge“mountain lodge” style features a kiln-dried Douglas fir frame and an open plan that lives large despite the modest square footage.

“The post-and-beam frame allowed us to create the expansive cathedral ceilings, which ultimately led to the open-concept design,” explains Jon Sevigny, senior designer at Yankee Barn Homes in Grantham, New Hampshire.

Well-placed, oversized windows also make the house feel more spacious, while offering sweeping views of the local mountain ranges.

Other highlights in the three-bedroom, two-bathroom house include an upper loft that doubles as both a sitting area and play room for the kids, and a large deck off the front of the home — a feature that almost doubles the living space in warmer months.

“This plan is all about using space as efficiently as possible,” says Sevigny. “The loft helps extend the living area for the growing family, and the open-concept design means the dining area, great room and kitchen can all live harmoniously together in one space. It really is the perfect weekend getaway.”

What makes it the best

  • The striking structural frame creates an open-concept plan for easy living, while bringing visual interest to the interior spaces.
  • The cozy feel doesn’t feel constricting thanks to ample windows, simple decor and a neutral color scheme.
  • Smart design details like charming nooks, sliding doors and switchback stairs make the best use of every inch of space.
