It's All Fun and Games | Game Rooms
by: Donna Peak | Timber Home Living
Designing and building your dream timber home is serious business—after all, when you're investing this kind of money, you want to get it right. However, living in your house should be nothing but pure enjoyment, and no other room embodies the spirit of fun more than the game room does.
Sometimes referred to as the rec room, this is the space where you can really turn your creative juices loose. For some folks, the style is clean and classic; others opt for a funky vibe. Whichever category you fall into, there are numerous approaches you can take. You can keep it simple with an understated poker table and casual-conversation areas, or you can go hog wild, outfitting your space with everything from a pool table to a sophisticated, fully stocked bar worthy of the swankiest watering hole.
How you intend to use it will help determine how you should plan it, but rest assured, when done right, you'll always have a full house.

Class Act
Elegance reigns supreme in this multipurpose rec area. Though wide open, the space is "divided" into three sophisticated groupings: the conversation couches; the pool table/gaming zone; and the bar. Friends and family can interact freely between these spaces, but the smart positioning means they won't risk bumping into each other (spoiling a perfectly aligned shot). The ceiling's tin tile and beam work lowers the perception of the room, making it feel intimate, but its reflective properties actually help brighten up the space. |

Bold Moves
With the infusion of wood tones in a timber home, a basement-level game room can be a place to let the color wheel spin freely. In this home, the chartreuse walls, ceiling and built-in cabinetry are punctuated by a neon-toned print above the fireplace but are grounded by a black leather sectional and pool table. Using minimal accent furnishings (with a 1970s attitude) means that each piece stands out as a functional focal point. |

Man Made
Poor fellas—when it comes to interior design, they often seem to be banished to the basement. But in today's home design, there's a lot of talk about "the man cave," and this space is quickly becoming a guy's artistic outlet. Case in point: this tribute to all things sports. There's no way this guy came in with his jerseys and helmets at the last minute. Check out the baseballs, golf balls and pool balls embedded into bar's stone facade. The rafters seem custom designed for his beer mug and bottle collection, as does the TV nook. We dare any local sports bar to come close. |

No Rules
Make way for the teenagers! Bold graffiti peppers the walls; the flooring looks like the artist's drop cloth; and bumper stickers cover the support post of this wild space. Billiards shares equal billing with a Ping Pong table and a pro-style dart board—everything a teen (or a kid at heart) needs for a good time. |

Above It All
Nothing says a game room has to be subterranean. This home's gathering spot is on the main level, but it still boasts all the trappings of a typical basement-level rec area—fireplace, TV cabinet, plenty of seating and, of course, a pool table. But in this case, the entertainment hub also comes with a sweeping view of the countryside, thanks to French doors that lead
to a deep deck. |
