"Jeryl came to me with an architectural vision for the barn he wanted. I took that idea and designed a timber frame based on historical designs and the property. It was a really fun project." —Mark Miller, owner, Trail Ridge Timber Frames

The barn is constructed from western Douglas fir timbers, which were cut green and rough sawn. "The timbers dried and checked over time," says home-owner Jeryl Benner. "I think the finished result adds a lot of character to the barn."

Although the barn doesn't provide a place for guests to sleep, it does has a bathroom with a shower (not shown). Wood walls and western details, such as the copper basin sink and outdoor pendant light, add rustic charm.

"When we thought up the idea for the barn, we thought it could be a place to hang out, but also a place to store toys, like our motorcycle," says Jeryl. Garage-style doors make it easy to bring large items in, while enjoying the great outdoors.

Because the barn is so open, the Benners decided to include a loft where people could retreat for a little peace and quiet. The loft also houses extra game tables.

On the main floor, the Benners opted for acid-stained concrete flooring in a warm brown hue. They also installed gas-fire in-floor heating, so the barn stays comfortable year round.
